There’s something interesting about seeing an old football boot become an everyday sneaker.
Nike is revisiting the Mercurial Chrome ’02 with a new Cryoshot interpretation that keeps much of the original appearance while changing how the shoe functions.
The result is a sneaker that looks like it belongs on a football pitch but is designed for everyday wear.
From the Pitch to the Street
The original Mercurial design was built around speed and an aggressive football aesthetic. The new Cryoshot Mercurial Chrome ’02 OG retains the metallic appearance, combining Chrome with Hot Lime accents.
But the biggest difference is underneath. Rather than using exposed football studs, Nike has enclosed the stud-inspired design within a transparent outsole. That allows the shoe to maintain its football identity while adapting the construction for casual use.
Updated for Everyday Comfort
Nike uses a synthetic leather upper to recreate the original look. A drop-in midsole provides cushioning, while a Zoom Air unit in the heel adds another element of comfort.
It’s a relatively simple approach: preserve the recognizable appearance, then make the necessary changes for everyday wear.
Shervarino Take
I like seeing brands revisit older performance designs and find ways to make them relevant again.
The Mercurial Chrome has a distinctive look, and the transparent outsole is probably my favorite detail. It gives the shoe a football-inspired personality without requiring someone to wear an actual pair of cleats.
It’s definitely not going to appeal to everyone, but that’s part of what makes it interesting.
